The Sandwell Honours was commissioned by Multistory as part of the Blast! Festival to be held in Sandwell over the summer of 2019.
This work is a celebration of Sandwell, it’s people, it’s tales and it’s retention of individual identity while being part of a greater whole. 2019 marks 45 years since Tipton, Wednesbury, West Bromwich, Smethwick, Oldbury and Rowley Regis came together to form one municipal borough, and each area has very much kept its own character.
As such I’m creating a fabulous object for each of Sandwell’s towns, a relic that refers to the history of each area which combine to make ‘The Sandwell Honours’, a reference to crown jewels and revered finery. The Objects are:
The Pollyknocker – Oldbury
The Gauntlet of Mercia – Wednesbury
The Skull of the Slasher’s Monkey – Tipton
The Chalice of Chance – Smethwick
The Robe of Providence – West Bromwich
The Bibble Crown – Rowley Regis
